From the Early Days of Search to the AI Revolution: My 25+ Year Journey Through Digital Change

Today, every business knows how important it is to be found online.

But it wasn’t always like that.

There was a time when business owners questioned whether they even needed a website. Google was still earning its place as the leading search engine, social media was just beginning, smartphones had not changed the way people searched, and artificial intelligence felt like something from the future.

That was the digital world I stepped into.

In the early 2000s, through Bay Leaf Media, I was helping businesses understand a shift that many people did not fully see yet.

The internet was no longer just a place to share information.

It was becoming the place where customers made decisions.

Back then, having a website alone made a business feel ahead of the curve.

But I learned something very quickly:

A website that nobody can find is like opening a beautiful store where nobody knows the address.

Visibility mattered.

As search engines grew, the way businesses competed online changed. Success was no longer just about having a website. It became about understanding what customers were searching for, building trust, creating authority, and showing up at the exact moment people were looking for answers.

By 2007, Fresh Traffic was helping companies navigate this new era of search marketing from the United Kingdom, eventually growing into what would become Fresh Traffic Group in North America.

Over the last 25+ years, I’ve had a front-row seat to one digital revolution after another.

I’ve watched businesses adapt, struggle, grow, and sometimes disappear through every major change:

The first wave of websites.

Google becoming the gateway to information.

Constant search algorithm updates.

The rise of mobile.

Local search changing how customers find nearby businesses.

Social media reshaping communication.

Content becoming a foundation of trust.

And now, artificial intelligence changing everything again.

Every few years, someone declares that “SEO is dead.”

But it never really disappears.

It evolves.

Because the core idea has always stayed the same:

People need answers.

Businesses need to be found.

The technology connecting them is what changes.

Today, we are experiencing what may be the biggest shift since Google changed search forever — the rise of AI-powered discovery.

Customers are no longer just typing keywords into search engines.

They are asking AI tools for advice, recommendations, comparisons, solutions, and which companies they should trust.

The question businesses need to ask is no longer only:

“Can customers find us on Google?”

The bigger question is becoming:

“Does the digital world understand our business well enough to recommend us?”

After more than two decades in this industry, one lesson has never changed:

The companies that adapt early create the advantage.

The businesses that waited too long to embrace websites fell behind.

The businesses that ignored search lost opportunities.

The businesses that ignore AI discovery could face the same challenge.

At Fresh Traffic Group, our mission has always stayed the same.

The tools change.

The platforms change.

The algorithms change.

But the goal never changes:

Helping great businesses become the companies customers discover first.

Because after 25+ years of digital transformation, one thing remains true:

The best company does not always win.

The company people find often does.
